New Details Emerge on Fiat's 500L Wagon that will Debut in Geneva and go on Sale in the U.S. in 2013

We had heard earlier this month that Fiat was preparing a new five-door variant of its 500 city car but we didn't know much else about the Italian firm's plans.
Today, Autonews has the inside scoop on the new model reporting that it will allegedly be called 500L with its world premiere to take place at the Geneva Salon in March.
We also learn that while it will keep the 500s familiar face and styling cues, it will be based on the same architecture as the larger Punto to improve passenger and luggage space.
The 500L is said to measure around 4,150mm long (163.4-inches) or about 60mm (2.5-inches) more than the three-door 500 hatchback, while it will also be taller and wider than the original.
In Geneva, we'll see a five-seater version but the report goes on to say that in the following months, Fiat will launch a seven-seater variant with an additional 10mm (0.4-inches) in length (though we reckon this is probably a typo with the author meaning to say 100mm).
The 500L will effectively replace Fiat's aging Idea in the small MPV segment targeting the likes of the Opel Meriva and the upcoming Ford B-Max.
European sales of the 500L are expected to start as early as July while the five-seater model will be offered in the States from 2013. The report indicates that Fiat has no plans to sell the 7-seater variant in the U.S., as it believes American consumers won't buy such a small seven-seater model.
The 500L will be manufactured at the former Zastava site in Kragujevac, Serbia, that Fiat acquired back in 2008.

Where Do You Think You're Going? Woman Tries to Escape Three Times After Being Stopped by Police

Surely, anyone with an iota of common sense would give it up when surrounded by at least three police vehicles, right? Well, maybe most people but not Alexandra Osteyee-Hoffman.
The 28-year old North Carolina woman tried not once, but three times (!) to escape from the police last Friday. It all began when deputies came to her house to serve papers on a hearing. The officer approached her Toyota Corolla and asked for her at which point she took off only to be cornered by at least three police vehicles shortly after.
From that point on, we have the video footagefrom the police car dashboard camera, which shows her fleeing the scene for the second time leading the police on a high-speed chase – well, as fast as a Corolla can go, that is…
Police officers had no trouble passing here and dropping stop sticks on the road, one of which pierced her tire. However, the young woman wasn't about to give up as she attempted to flee on foot. The deputies had no problem catching her after a very brief chase…
According to WBTV news, the woman faces several charges including, but not limited to, felony fleeing to elude arrest, fail to yield and stop, reckless driving to endanger and three counts of resisting a public officer.

Blown up Tank Arrives in front of Kim DotCom's New Zealand Mansion

Even though Kim DotCom, otherwise known as Kim Schmitz, is currently behind bars awaiting possible extradition to the United States after a New Zealand judge denied an application for bail on Wednesday, the founder of the popular file-sharing website MegaUpload continues to make headlines for reasons not related directly to his case.
After his amazing collection of luxury cars were seized by police last Friday, we thought that would be the last we heard about DotCom's toys.
Apparently, we were wrong as it has been reported by several New Zealand newspapers that after his arrest, Dotcom's mansion received delivery of a…full-size inflatable replica of a Russian T-72 tank!
Pictures show the fake tank parked in front of the $30 million mansion that he leases with his pregnant wife and three children. The New Zealand Herald wrote that sources close to the FBI-led raid confirmed that the tank was "definitely" not there when they seized DotCom's possessions.
"It looks pretty real," one neighbor told the news daily adding, "Too much money."
Decoy tanks look like the real thing from a distance and have been used by armies around the globe since World War I.

2013 SRT Viper Teaser Shot Coming on Monday

Last night, the Chrysler Group's SRT crew had us constantly refreshing its Facebook page to see if it would upload the promised teaser photo of the next generation 2013 Viper sports car once it reached 10,000 "likes".
A couple hundred clicks later, SRT came out with an announcement saying that the teaser was the teaser it would release the first official shot on Monday, 11:59.59 PM Eastern Time.
Let's just hope that the picture will be worth the wait and SRT won’t disappoint with one of those shady crops some automakers tend to publish, supposedly to create buzz around their upcoming model.
The third generation of the Viper will receive its world premiere at the New York Auto Show this April and go on sale in the U.S. early next year.

comments Toyota TS030 Hybrid Le Mans Racer Sounds Like the Batmobile when it Takes Off

The first thing that came to mind upon viewing the videos of Toyota's brand-new TS030 Hybrid Le Mans Racer as it was leaving the pits at the Paul Ricard circuit in France for its first test run was the Batmobile – well, that or Anakin Skywalker's podracer from Star Wars Episode 1.
And no, we're not referring to the racecar's shape and styling but the sounds emitted by thehybrid powertrain which starts off with the electric motor before the V8 engine kicks in like an afterburner – yes, it's that cool.
After that, you get the usual screaming sounds produced by race-prepped engines.
Toyota's racing team is still developing the TS030 Hybrid as it has yet to decide whether it will combine the all-new 3.4-litre normally-aspirated V8 petrol engine with an electric motor from Aisin AW powering the front wheels or an electric motor from DENSO driving the rear axle (regulations stipulate that electric motors can only power two wheels).
The TS030 Hybrid will make its racing debut on May 5 in the Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps for the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

New BMW ActiveHybrid 5 Priced from $61,845, Nearly $10k more than the 535i [130 Photos]

If you want a little more power (but slightly worse performance) and a little better fuel economy and don't mind paying US$9,345 over the price of a regular 535i, then you may want to take a look at BMW's new ActiveHybrid 5 sedan.
If you live in Europe or in any other region where BMW offers diesel variants of the 5-Series, then you're probably better off with one of those models – we'll explain why later on.
BMW today announced that the ActiveHybrid 5 will go on sale in the States in March with a base MSRP of $61,845 (€47,800), which includes an $895 destination and handling fee.
The ActiveHybrid 5 brings together BMW's 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine with 300hp and 300 lb-ft (EU-spec: 306hp and 400Nm), an electric drive system producing 54hp and 155 lb-ft, and an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The hybrid drive system generates a combined output of 335hp and 330 lb-ft (EU-spec: 340hp and 450Nm), which allows the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 37mph (60km/h) for 2.5 miles (4km), and accelerates the sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds).
In comparison, the 535i completes the 0-60mph sprint in 5.6 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds) and returns up to 31mpg highway EPA.
While BMW has not yet announced EPA estimates for the U.S. model, across the pond, the ActiveHybrid 5 is claimed to return between 6.4 and 7.0lt/100km on the combined European driving cycle (33.6 - 37.8 mpg US).
The European market 535d that's powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six diesel delivering 313HP and 630Nm (465 lb-ft), does the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.5 seconds and returns a combined fuel consumption of 5.4-5.6lt/100km (42 - 43.6 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 142-148g/km.
So basically, the 535d is not only faster, but also more fuel efficient and with lower CO2 emissions than the EU-spec ActiveHybrid 5 (149– 163g/km) – which is why we said before that the Europeans are better off looking at BMW's diesel range.

comments 2012 MINI Roadster Priced from $24,350 to $34,500*, Costs $600 Less than the Convertible

Mini has just released U.S. pricing for its new two-seater Roadster model that will be available in three flavors.
The Cooper Roadster is priced at $24,350 and is powered by a 121HP 1.6-liter inline four that allows it to hit 60mph in 8.7 seconds and top out at 124mph, while returning 30mpg combined.
Next up is the Cooper S Roadster with an MSRP of $27,350 that is equipped with a 181HP 1.6-liter turbo. It accelerates from zero to 60mph in 6.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 141mph, while delivering a combined fuel economy of 30mpg.
Finally, the John Cooper Works Roadster is the most expensive at $34,500 but also the fastest thanks to its 208HP 1.6-liter turbo engine that propels it to 60mph in 6.3 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 147mph. It has a combined fuel economy of 28mpg.
All the above MSRPs do not include a $700 (*) destination and handling charge.
Interestingly, the two-seater Roadster is $600 cheaper than the equivalent versions of the four-seater Mini Convertible.
However, roadster enthusiasts may also want to take a look at the rear-wheel drive Mazda MX-5 that comes with a 167HP 2.0-liter unit and starts from $23,470 for the soft top model and $27,540 for the retractable hardtop variant.

Renault Megane cleans up its act for 2012

27 January 2012

Renault Megane 2012 facelift version
By the time 2012 draws to a close, Renault will have launched a full line-up of electric vehicles in the UK, comprising a van, saloon, hatchback, and whatever it is that the Twizy is.

While Renault’s electric range is expanding, its conventional car roster is doing the opposite. The company has ceased to offer some of its niche vehicles in the UK, including the Espace people carrier, the Modus mini-MPV, and the Wind roadster that barely seemed to have arrived before it was gone. The French company evidently feels the need to focus in the very tough market for non-premium motors.

The Renaults that remain are being refreshed for 2012, and the one that caught my eye was the revised Megane, which can now be had in a 110bhp diesel version with a CO2 emissions rating of just 90g/km. That really is a deeply impressive pair of numbers for a mid-sized hatchback, which of course will evade showroom tax, road tax and the London congestion charge.

The engine delivering these results, together with combined cycle economy of 80.7mpg, is a 1.5-litre dCi. It’s a thoroughly revised version of the engine that propelled the outgoing Megane Eco2 edition, which managed only 106g/km, but the addition of stop-start plus other improvements has clearly made a big difference.

Renault’s new Stop & Start feature has also been added to the two other options for the Megane’s engine bay, a 130bhp 1.6-litre dCi diesel and a 115bhp 1.2-litre TCe petrol. The bigger diesel is rated at 104g/km and the petrol plugger at 119g/km.

The TCe petrol engine is Renault’s latest downsized, high-tech offering, featuring direct injection and turbocharging. It offers more power, more torque, and 25 per cent better fuel economy than the old 1.6-litre unit now headed for retirement.

Renault will clearly be hoping that these more economical engines, together with a new nose and other styling tweaks, will transform the fortunes of its often overlooked hatchback. We shall see when the facelifted Megane goes on sale in April.

Macworld Conference Carries On Without Apple

Macworld Conference Carries On Without Apple

 | January 26, 2012, 3:30 PM
Steven P. Jobs introduced the first iPhone at MacWorld in 2007.Steven P. Jobs introduced the first iPhone at MacWorld in 2007.
5:47 p.m. | Updated to correct the date of the year that Steven P. Jobs last appeared at Macworld.
On Dec. 16, 2008, the Macworld conference received what many assumed would be a fatal wound: Apple said it would bail out of the show as an exhibitor and keynoter after one last appearance at the San Francisco event in early January 2009.
Macworld refused to die, though, and while turnout for the event isn’t what it used to be before it lost its banner company, attendance seems to have stabilized and is even expected to grow this year, according to conference organizers. On Thursday, the doors opened on Macworld’s third event without Apple in San Francisco.
Still, how does an Apple-free event devoted to all things Apple survive?
By turning itself into the ultimate event for Apple fanboys (and girls) by tapping more deeply into the seemingly bottomless enthusiasm they have for Apple’s products. IDG World Expo, the organizer of the conference, also changed the event’s name to Macworld iWorld in a nod to the importance of the iPad and iPhone. The tagline of the show is “the ultimate iFan event.”
Paul Kent, vice president at IDG World Expo and general manager for the show, said Macworld had become a place for Apple fans to find things or receive technical training that they can’t get in, say, an Apple retail store. He said less than half of the exhibitors at this year’s show were app developers for the Mac or iOS devices like the iPhone, with most devoted to utilities and accessories like iPhone speaker docks, iPad cases and microphones.
“Before all of the gravity was about what Apple was announcing,” Mr. Kent said. “We don’t have that anymore. We can help them discover new products.”
IDG has tried to give the event some of the artistic stimulation of Austin’s SXSW and the Sundance Film Festival with nightly movie screenings and musical performances from bands like Moe and Modest Mouse.
Mr. Kent also believes that Macworld has a unique appeal because it is one of the few technology oriented conferences aimed squarely at consumers, not members of the tech industry. Despite its name, the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas — which has lost a big exhibitor of its own, Microsoft — does not allow the general public in.
Mr. Kent expects attendance to be about 25,000 at this year’s Macworld, compared with about 22,000 last year.  About 36,000 people went to the 2009 Macworld. But Apple had already taken some steam out of that year’s show by announcing that it would leave Macworld and by substituting Philip Schiller, its senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, for Steven P. Jobs, then its chief executive, as a keynote speaker.
At the January 2008 Macworld, the last year Mr. Jobs delivered a keynote address at the show, attendance was about 48,000. Mr. Jobs introduced new MacBook Airs at that event, and the first iPhone the prior year at the show.
It will be tough to replace an attraction like that.
An earlier version of this post misstated the date that Steven P. Jobs last appeared at Macworld. It was 2008.
