Free People February Catalog

Free People's February catalog is here, and this month it stars none other than the fiercely beautiful Freja Beha Erichsen. I love her name, it has such a nice ring to it. For the book's concept, Freja takes on each of the brand's imaginary "girl types": Candy, Meadow, Ginger, Lou, and Molly – who is now being introduced to the public for the very first time. The fashion changes with each girl, from Lou's graphic tees and sporty touches, to Candy's polar opposite frilly and flirty dresses. Photographer Joshua Allen captured Freja as she embodies the free-spirited nature of each persona. Accompanying the photographs, Free People put together a behind-the-scenes video set to Mal Blum's track, "New Years Eve," that's pretty cool. For all you Free People fans, I'll try my best to post these lookbooks each month moving forward. Enjoy!

VW Up and friends gain doors but keep their charm

31 January 2012

VW Up 5-door from the side-rear
Pictures haven’t been released yet, but it won’t take a creative genius to imagine what the upcoming Seat Mii five-door will look like, now that we’ve seen its two litter-mates showing off their extra entry points. Pictures of the new five-door versions of the Skoda Citigo and VW Up have been released ahead of the Geneva Motor Show in March, where presumably a more accessible Mii will make up the full trio.

These cute little city cars have lost none of their charm in the transition to a more practical format, although the Volkswagen hast surrendered a little of its uniqueness. In three-door form, the Up was a kinked rear window-line where its Seat and Skoda counterparts have a ruler-straight shoulder. In five door form, both Skoda and VW have the same sheet metal and glass and presumably the Seat will too.

Skoda Citigo front view
VW Up with passenger doors open
Doors aside, the cars remain virtually identical to the three-door hatches we’ve already seen and admired. The 251-litre boot has the same capacity, the wheelbase has not been stretched, and there’s the same headroom front and rear. Engines and exterior dimensions remain unchanged, as should their exceptionally low car insurance ratings – group 1E for the base and middle trim versions rising only slightly to 2E for the plushest High Up edition of the VW.

If similar city cars like the Toyota Aygo are any guide, there shouldn’t be any weight penalty for adding the extra pair of doors, so performance and emissions ought to remain unchanged as well. The photos reveal that the glass in the rear doors doesn’t wind down but pops out on a front hinge. This keeps the rear doors as simple and light as possible, and is a tactic successfully employed by the five-door Aygo and its Peugeot and Citroen cousins.

Given the above similarities, all three brands should be able to offer a five-door variant that sneaks under the 100g/km cut-off point, allowing them to flit in and out of the London Congestion Zone without the troublesome business of paying a fee.

Three-door versions of the Volkswagen are already on sale and will be delivered in the spring, with the five-door lagging behind by three months or so. Skoda has indicated that both five-door and three-door variants of its Citigo will reach the UK at the same time, launching in mid-May. Seat will no doubt adopt Skoda’s timetable with the Mii. All of the cars, irrespective of badge or body style, will be built in the same Slovakian factory.

Prices have yet to be announced, but the going rate for an extra pair of doors in this part of the market is around £350 to £400, meaning entry level prices around £8,395 for the VW and under £8,000 for the other two brands.

Analysis: Why Aren't Diesel Engines More Popular in the States?

|

Unlike European motorists, the vast majority of U.S. car buyers prefer their vehicles’ engines to consume gasoline and not diesel. Across the pond, diesel-powered models account for half of all vehicle sales, reaching at times as high as 70 percent of the market in countries like Italy and France.
Residents of the Old Continent have been choosing diesel over gasoline models for a very obvious reason: a diesel engine is on average 40 percent more efficient than a gasoline unit.
With the emissions problems that plagued previous generation diesel engines now solved and the added benefit of low-end torque, which is quite useful in real world driving, opting for a diesel is the obvious choice when it comes to everyday models.
Manufacturers are also investing heavily on diesel technology. Even Porsche - of all makers, offers diesel versions of its Panamera and Cayenne models. BMW recently rolled out M-Performance badged diesel models (albeit with three turbos). But it’s not power they’re after, but the need to comply with fuel consumption and CO2 emission regulations.
Some carmakers have already announced that they will bring diesel versions of their models in America. A Cruze with a 160HP 2.0-liter turbodiesel under its hood and a combined fuel consumption of 5.2 lt/100 km (42 mpg US) on the European cycle will hit Chevy's American showrooms in early 2013 – around the same time as the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D Mazda CX-5 crossover and the Cayenne 3.0-liter diesel.
Last year, diesel-powered models sales increased by an impressive 27.4 percent in the States. The bad news is that they were mostly German cars (BMW, Mercedes-Benz and VW) and their overall share in the new car market is just 3.0 percent.
For most manufacturers, though, this side of the Atlantic remains strictly a gasoline territory. Mercedes-Benz, for example, introduced two hybrid versions of the E-Class mid-size luxury sedan. They share the same electric motor and battery pack, but under the hood, one of them has a gasoline engine and the other a diesel. Although the diesel hybrid has a fuel consumption of 56.0 mpg (on the EU cycle) and the gasoline version manages 27 mpg (CAFE standards), only the second will be available on this side of the Atlantic.
At a time when the administration is introducing a 54.5 mpg CAFE standard for 2025, one would expect that more carmakers would change their stance of keeping diesels out of the U.S. But it looks unlikely that they will.
“Yes, diesels have a substantial advantage over gasoline engines”, says John German, a senior fellow with the International Council on Clean Transportation think tank. “And it’s puzzling why there are not more of them in use in the United States.”
Mazda North America product development engineer Dave Coleman has a reasonable explanation. “Their benefits are not immediately obvious to U.S. consumers. It requires some arithmetic and a calculator. The pump price of diesel is higher than gasoline – higher even than premium gas.”
But Coleman has an answer for that, too: “The diesel engine costs more do build, so it’s more expensive to buy. So you have to calculate what your savings will be over years of driving.”
Surely, though, Americans can do the math and grasp the concept of getting at least 40 percent more mileage out of a single tank. Yes, diesels cost, on average, US$2,700 more than gasoline versions of the same model.
At the same time, they are buying hybrids at twice the rate. And these cost an average of US$6,300 more than gasoline-engine cars. Therefore, the sticker price argument falls apart.
The real problem is the price they have to pay at the fuel pump. Whereas in Europe diesel is usually a bit cheaper, in the States a gallon of gasoline costs on average US$3.39 compared to US$3.85 for a gallon of diesel.
The difference wouldn’t be that high if the U.S. government didn’t impose a higher federal tax on diesel fuel than on gasoline and the refineries weren’t willing to export refined diesel to Europe where it is in high demand.

comments Volkswagen's New Super Bowl Ad will Make You Miss Little Darth Vader

|

Admittedly, Volkswagen's advertising agency had some pretty big shoes to fill with its 2012 Super Bowl ad after last year's game day commercial "The Force", which has since garnered some 50 million views on the company's own YouTube channel alone, but we're not so sure it has succeeded with the "The Dog Strikes Back".
The German company aired today the extended 75-second long spot online with the 60-second version of the ad running in the second quarter of the Big Game on February 5.
In the first part of "The Dog Strikes Back", the ad shows a dog named Bolt who wants to get into shape to be able to get out of the house and chase a 2012 VW Beetle, while in the second part that lasts 15 seconds we're taken to theCantina introduced in Star Wars Episode IV, with Darth Vader making a special appearance.
"This year's commercial will build on Volkswagen's ability to tell human stories simply while continuing to build on the brand's momentum in the year ahead," said Tim Mahoney, Chief Product and Marketing Officer, Volkswagen of America.

comments Acura to Debut Production Versions of New ILX Sedan and RDX at the Chicago Auto Show

|

Next week's 2012 Chicago Auto Show will play host to the world premiere of the final production versions of Acura's all-new ILX compact sedanand the redesigned RDX crossover, both of which we're displayed in showcar form in Detroit last month.
The changes on the production models are expected to be limited to some subtle design details such as the bumpers and the alloy wheels.
The 2013 ILX is Acura's take on the premium compact sedan segment. It is based on the running gear of the latest Honda Civic but sports unique sheetmetal. The ILX launches this spring with an entry-level 2.0-liter inline-four, a higher-performance 2.4-liter 4-cylinder paired to a six-speed manual gearbox and a 1.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, which will be Acura's first-ever hybrid offering.
The redesigned 2013 RDX crossover will also go on sale in the States this spring bringing a more mature styling plus a 3.5-liter V6 that replaces the outgoing models turbocharged inline four.
For the time being, check out the pictures of the concept versions in our gallery below.

The Smart Fortwo city car is entering the 2012 model year with some subtle styling revisions, most of which were previewed on the third-generation ForTwo Electric displayed at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show.On the outside, the 2012 Fortwo gets a larger radiator grille with an integrated "Smart" logo along with a new bumper design, optionally available horizontally arranged LED daytime driving lights, and modified side skirts and rear aprons.

2010 Acura ZDX review

The Acura ZDX luxury four-door sports coupe made its world debut at the New York International Auto Show today. The production version of the dramatically styled prototype goes on-sale in the fall of 2009. The segment bending ZDX features stunning coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility.

The ZDX is designed to break new ground for Acura in the areas of provocative styling, contemporary luxury and meticulous refinement. With its sensuous curves, sharply raked roofline and bold fender flares, the ZDX blurs the distinction between coupe, sedan and sport utility vehicle. Clean, flowing lines start from the headlights and run the length of the car, accentuating the cars presence and grace. In keeping with the coupe-inspired styling, the rear door handles are cleverly concealed in the C-pillar.

The production ZDX will bring a new level of prestige and sophistication when it arrives at Acura dealerships in the fall, offering the latest advancements in performance, technology and safety. The ZDX will deliver sports sedan performance on the road with its powerful V-6 engine mated to an all-new, smooth shifting 6-speed automatic transmission. The potent powertrain will be coupled with Acura's exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ system.

MotoGP: Valentino Rossi over the moon over new Ducati at Sepang Test

Probably the most nervous rider and team at the 2012 MotoGP Sepang test would have to be Valentino Rossi and his Ducati crew.  After completely redesigning the GP11 from the ground up to the present form has been remarkable.  According to the Chief Ducati engineer  Filippo Preziosi has been pushing his team of engineers to build the best bike in the shortest amount of time.  He even claimed that no one was allowed to go on vacation until it is finished.
Valentino Rossi – Position 5 – Time 2’02.392
“We are already ‘half way’ compared with last year. The distance is 0.7s compared with Lorenzo, who did a very good lap I am so happy especially because we fixed a lot of problems that in all of the 2011 season we were not able to improve. Braking, corner entry, agility – the bike is a lot better. Ducati have done a great job in a short time.   It is just the first day, so we must work a lot. I think in acceleration the bike remains a bit too unstable [running wide]. I think the engine and electronics, a little bit of chassis, but we can do [it] I think. We can be competitive.”
Only one day on the bike and rumors have it that Rossi was patting the gas tank of the bike after the first run like a well behaved dog are all good indicators.  The 2012 Ducati Desmosedici GP12 has lived up to the hype so far.  It is hard to predict a season from one run on the bike.  But initial feedback and the smile on Rossi’s face should be clear indications that things are moving in the right direction.
“Now I can [load] the front tyre. I can use the front and the tyre works well,” he explained. “It is a big, big step compared to last year. Also with my position on the bike, last year I never felt confident. With this one I have enough room in the straight and a good position in the corner.
“Another very positive thing today is that when we worked on the bike we improved. That is a record for me! Last year never! Always the same or maybe worse. This time we work on the bike and every exit 0.1s-0.2s faster.  Last year on the third lap we would do a lap time – and after 50 laps the lap time was maybe a little worse!”
Day 2 of the Sepang test continues tomorrow with Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden continuing testing with the new GP12 Ducati.  Teammate Nicky Hayden is struggling with his injured shoulder but still proving valuable feedback.
Come on hurry up Race 1 we cannot wait.
